In September 2019, I started an artwork about climate change (百パーセントEARTH AIR 2077). By the time I was finished in November, bushfires had started to ravish the Australian landscape, threatening wildlife, homes and rural communities. The air became toxic, and at times ash rained down in major city districts, leading many to wear protective masks. The original intention of 百パーセントEARTH AIR 2077 was to pay homage to cyberpunk aesthetic and at the same time to make a statement on what could be, and how clean air might one day be sold back to us like bottled water is today. I never really anticipated what would come to be in only a few months.
The entire country is now in a state of emergency, and our government all but refuses to help those in need. What relief has now been begrudgingly scraped together is too little too late. If you would like to help, please search "Australian bushfires how to help" for references to the many fundraisers available.
